Three Stone Family DNA Study Participants claiming descent from Gov. William Stone line.

Email has corrected some information that I have regarding Joshua Stone descendants. I will add to that information. This seems to support the fact that the William and Sarah Stone line is not that of Gov. William Stone of Maryland. Harlan Sloan (hsloan2002@hotmail.com) also says that that: William and Sarah never lived in Amelia Co., Va... They lived first in Kingston Parish in Glouchester Co. Va.... then moved to Totuskey Creek in Rappahanack Co., Va; which became Richmond Co, Va.

Joe, you have a great!!! Stone page on the internet. I have enjoyed reading and studying your page. Since I am a descendant of one of the Stone lines you have on your page and have noticed several of the children have been omitted. I would like to share with you what I have on this family. I do not estimate birth or death dates of the names I have. What I have is my understanding and simple reasoning after reading the Wills of William and Sarah Stone. Diane (Sunnie 629@aol.com)

William and Sarah Stone of Totuskey Creek, Va. (Totuskey Creek, Va. became part of Richmond County 5/12/1692) Seven children were born to this marriage: 1. Phillip Stone m. Sarah (he is mentioned in father's will) 2. Joshua m. Mary ( he is mentioned in father's will) 3. Mary m. John Fann ( she is mentioned in father's will) 4. Sarah b. 1671 d. 1730 m. Thomas Glascock ( she is not in will, two of her

children are mentioned) 5. Elizabeth d. 10/9/1725 m. William Dawson (she is mentioned in father's will) 6. Daughter (name unknown) m. Robert Schofield (she is not named in father's will but her husband is mentioned) 7. William d. 1749 m. Elizabeth ( he is not in his father's will but he is the Executor of his mother Sarah's will proved 1717)

Several land purchase deeds are recorded in Essex County Court House in Tappahannock, Virginia for William Stone (where Old Rappahannock County records are kept.) Deed Book # 5, page 86, 87 purchased 200 acres on Totuskey Creek , ate purchased 720 acres, page 105, recorded 4/7/1680, purchased 250 acres, page 106 recored 4/7/1680.

William Stone's will is recored in Warsaw, Va. 1/31/1707-08 in Folio F. 114V. A statement from his wife Sarah is recorded in Warsaw, Va. 1/31/1707 in Folio F 113 R. re: the disappearance of William's will which she has now found and has succeeded in getting it on record. The will of Sarah Stone is recorded May 1, 1717. Warsaw, Va. The youngest son William Stone is named as her Executor.

I have several Hoskins on my database (mostly from CT and MA), but I am currious if Ann (whom I don't have listed) is related to Dolly Hoskins, Lucy Hoskins, and Mary J. Hoskins of VA.

Dolly and Lucy are listed as wives of John Stone b. 1754, and Mary J. is the wife of John's brother, Joshua b. 1744. I am told that it is this Joshua Stone my line connects to, just haven't found that "connection."

Hi Joe!

Thanks for sending your post to the Stone mailing list for me to see!!

It didn't take long for me to see that some of your ancestors were born in Gloucester Co. VA. But then few paragraphs later you say Gloucester, Kingston Parish became Richmond Co. Actually, Kingston Parish became Mathews Co. Va in 1791.

My Stone ancestors were there, but no I don't have them documented there until about 1870. I would love to exchange more info with you. Please write and tell me why you think Kingston Parish became Richmond Co.

Can't wait to hear from you, Mary

Hi~ Thanks for letting me know, I've already sent David Stone a note. Perhaps there was another Kingston Parish in Va, but the one that was part of Gloucester Co. broke off and became Mathews Co. in May 1791. I'd like to know what you find out. Thanks again, Mary

ON MARCH 14, YOU WROTE:

David,

Joe Payne of Knoxville sent me your email address.

I have been reading the Stone page he sent to the Stone mailing group with great interest.

I have a few questions, if you don't mind. What proof do you have that Phillip Stone was born in Gloucester Co. Va ca. 1650, and his son, William born there ca. 1680.

The son, Philip Stone left Amelia County about 1750 and went to Johnston County, North Carolina. In 1750, Philip Stone of Johnston County, N.C. sold land in Amelia County, Virginia, left to him by his father. Ref: Amelia County Deed Book 4 pp. 31, 32, 33. On November 14, 1750, Philip Stone of Johnston County, N.C. conveyed to Charles Connely and wife Katherine 200 acres for 5 shillings...Land left by his father. Ref. ibid., p. 84. On April 23, 1752.. Conveyed to Charles Connally and Robert Taylor, 100 acres in Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co., Va. for 16 pounds, were Dibdall Holt now lives, Ref. ibid, p. 33.

I have my Stone ancestors documented in Kingston Parish, Mathews Co. Va from about 1870.

Please let me know, I eagerly await your reply. Thanks, Mary

Looking for the CHILDREN of Phillip and Margaret Stone. They were married in Richmond Co. Va. moved to Amelia Co. Va. and then in Old Dobbs and Johnson Co. (Wayne, Glasgow, Lenoir) Green, Duplin all in N.C. I understand these county names keep changing.

Records were destroyed by fire for Johnston,1746-1759: Lenoir County,1792-1880: Dobbs County, 1759-1792. Fourteen land grants were in Phillip's name in Raleigh. N.C. but the children of Phillip and Margaret are the mystery.

Phillip Stone b. 1/10/1716 d. b4 178l m. Margaret (no inf.) children??? I know of one child and his name was Austin Stone b. 7/19/1748 lived in S.C. Does anyone have this Phillip Stone in their Stone Family Tree??? Diane

Joe,
I have been looking at your helpful web site on William and Sarah Stone in Gloucester County, VA. I am a direct descendent of theirs through Philip and his son Austin Stone. In perusing your site, I read postings from Diane, who (although a few years ago) was looking for other descendents of Philip Stone. I attempted to e-mail her at the address to which there was a link, Sunnie629@aol.com, but the message came back. I'm hoping she can answer some questions for me. I also have some things to share with her. Can you help me locate her? Postings seemed to fall off on that web site after 1998 or so.

I am not a genealogical researcher, but I recently acquired historical documents on Austin Stone's land acquisitions in South Carolina, which are now available for researchers at the South Carolina Historical Society. Also, is there anyone who has done recent research into who William 1's father and grandfather was? Speculation was that his father was Capt. John Stone, Sheriff of Gloucester County, VA., and that John was the son of George Stone, who emigrated from England. However, my father and others who researched in the early 1980s ran into a blank wall when they discovered no less than eleven or more Williams during the same period in the same location.

Thank you for your help. Terry Stone (Ellen Theresa Stone)

The youngest son of William and Sarah Stone of Totuskey Creek, Va was Executor of his mother Sarah's will: proved 5/1/1717 recorded in Warsaw, Va.

William Stone b. ? d. 1749 wife Elizabeth moved along with most of his married children and their families from Richmond County to Amelia County, Virginia and he purchased land there. (Deed Book 1, 1735-1743 page 299.)

William Stone died 1749 in Amelia County, Virginia. His will is recorded in will book I, 1735-1761 page 55. The will is dated 12/2/1748 and proved 4/21/1749. Ex: are William Manire and Joseph Harper (sons-in-law)

The will is very detailed and lengthy.

Ten children born to William and Elizabeth Stone: 1. Ann Stone b. 3/5/1713 m. William Manire (Ex. of William's 1749 will) 2. Margaret b. 1/5/1715 m. Lewis Hammond 3. Phillip b. 1/10/1716 m. Margaret 4. Elizabeth b. 8/31/1719 m. Robert Taylor 5. Lucy b. 10/29/1721 m. Henry Green 6. Joanna b. 4/11/1724 d. 12/11/1725 7. Henry Stone b. 9/13/1726 m. Frances Read (Reed) 8. Katherine b. 1/16/1728 m. Charles Connally 9. Sarah b. 10/25/1731 m. Joseph Harper, Jr. 10. William Stone b. 3/1/1734 (no inf.)

I think the seventh child, Henry b. 9/13/1726 is in your family, do you agree??? He is listed at your Stone site as # 90.

My line is the third child, Phillip b. 1/10/1716 (brother to your Henry) He moves to N.C. and sold back land he inherited from his father in Amelia Co. Va. to his sisters and brothers. (land he sold to them is recorded) Phillip also owned over 2,700 acres in N.C. (recorded in Raleigh, N.C. deed books) I am looking for other children that Phillip and Margaret had. One of their sons was Austin Stone b. 7/12/1748 m. Elizabeth b. 2/14/1751. Austin lived in N.C. a short time and then moved to S.C. (More on Austin is you need it) Diane

Joe, Thanks for the lenthgthy response. I think it's a pretty sure thing we are talking about the same family going back to the original William (married to Sarah), who David Stone estimates was born 1615 and died 1704-1707. He (David) follows the line with William's son, Philip. I believe the Sarah I'm descended from is Philip's sister, William's daughter.

My information on this family comes from Larry Glassco's book, The Glassco(ck) Saga. That book (which has brief mentions of the Stones because Sarah married Thomas Glasscock about 1689) claims there is a 1707 will of William in Farnham Parish, Richmond County, VA. In the will, William mentions his wife, Sarah, and children Philip, Joshua, Elizabeth, and Mary, and his grandson, John Glasscock (whose mother was Sarah Stone, so presumably she was dead by 1707). Glassco cites this will as being in William & Mary Quarterly, vol 17 (ser. 1), page 84.

In the file you sent there is mention that William has other children besides Philip. Do we know who these other children are. I'm guessing they must be Joshua, Elizabeth, Mary, and Sarah.

One other point that I would really like to clear up. In the LDS ancestral files, there is a Col. John Stone who is listed as the father of William Stone, the father of Sarah Stone who married Thomas Glasscock. In Glassco's book he mentions in a footnote that Col. Stone administered the oath of justice of the peace to Thomas Glasscock in 1692. Col. Stone was the sheriff of Richmond County. Glassco believes the William Stones might be related to this Col. John Stone but he's not sure how. It's clear from the dates that the LDS connection of Col. John's son William is not our William. However, before I realized that our connection was not direct from Col John Stone I looked him up and he has a rather illustrious background through his mother, Mary Vernon. If we could find a connection to Col. John, I think we'd impress all those doubters (in my family anyway, who wonder why I spend so much time at this hobby and who are quite bored by my stories unless I can come up with something spectacular in our collective family history, such as the Mayflower.)

Anyhow, I hope you can use this information on William. Let me know if you can confirm any of it. And let's see if we can find that connection to Col. John. Kelley

Hey Joe, I snail mailed the Historical Society Chronicle to you saturday and I found a descendant of William and Sarah's daughter named Elizabeth that married William Dawson her name is Patricia and she lives in Kentucky. her e-mail address is PatriciaOB@prodigy.net. From what she told me one of Elizabeth (Stone) Dawson's children was named Sarah Dawson married Andrew Morgan, lived in Nelson Co. KY and had abt. 17 children!!!

( if you would like a copy of her letter for your files I will forward it to you.)

I was thinking last night that now you have five people that have e-mailed you as coming from William and Sarah Stone of Totuskey Creek, Va.
1. John Walton Stone from son Joshua married Mary and (wayne nash???)
2. Lorna Cudley from daughter Mary married John Fann (ljcudney)
3. Kelly from daughter Sarah married Thomas Glascock (dkkmc)
4. Patricia OBoyle from daughter Elizabeth married William Dawson(Patricia OB@prodigy.net)
5. I think (if the reseacher is right with her information in the Chronicle)
you (Henry) and I (Phillip) from youngest son William married Elizabeth

After you receive the chronicle and look at the information and take note of the people that have e-mailed you about the children of William and Sarah that you will put them on your site as the father and mother of # 50, #50 #51,#53,#54, and vi. You should change Elizabeth m. Schofield (she did not marry schofield she married William Dawson) The estimated birthdates do not fit either. It does not take a rocket scientist to see Joshua b. 1725, could not have been born after his mother d.1717 and father had died 1707

The Gov. of Md. and all his people look good coming from William de Twiste
but all of us Stones did not come from that set. cu Diane

(19) Lucy3 Stone, (William2, William1) was born 29 Oct 1721, and married (52) Henry Green.

(20) Joanna3 Stone, (William2, William1) was born 11 Apr 1724. Joanna died on 11 Dec 1725.

(21) Henry3 Stone, (William2, William1) was born 3 Sep 1726 at Amelia Co., Va, and married (53) Frances Reed who was born in 1729 at Amelia Co., Va.

This is taken for The History of Washington Co. Tennessee, pg 504.

Henry Stone and his son William are on the first tax list of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, having moved there, then Halifax Co., in 1767. William was listed as being 23 years old in 1767. They both lived on the Dan River near William Bean. Henry was on the tax list in Watauga in 1787 so he must have come with William and the Beans.

As far as I can tell, this lineage is correct. I have seen some things that would indicate that your lineage is correct. I have been exploring the possibility of a Henry Stone being a relative of my ancestor Marble (or Marvel) Stone who was living around this area (actually in Albemarle and Prince Edward Co.) of Virginia around this time. I have Henry as being born 3 Sept 1726 and marrying Frances Read. They had a son William who is listed with a son John Thomas who married Sarah Henderson. J. T. had a daughter Elizabeth who married John Breeding.
Other children of John Stone were Mary, Thomas H., Reuben F., Susan, and John. I have Henry's father listed as William and Elizabeth Stone who lived in Amelia County, VA where William died in 1749. William was the son of Phillip Stone. Phillip's father was William Stone of Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., VA; later became Richmond Co., VA. His wife's name was Sarah. He died between 1704 and 1707 in Richmond Co. and left a will.
I have other children's names if you want them, but didn't know if you wanted me to go into that much detail. I have been trying to find anyone who knows the identity of a William Stone who was born ca 1760 in VA. He married Elizabeth Hardeman of Albemarle County. This William had several children, but two whose names stand out in particular: Marble and Solomon.
My ancestor Marble (who md. Lucy Bostick ca 1755) had a son named Solomon. I think this is too similar to be just coincidence. William Stone's father is listed in one source's documents as being Henry Stone, b. ca1740 in Virginia. I wonder if these two families might be related. I hope that I have been at all helpful regarding your own lineage. If you see anything on Marble Stone or William Stone in any of your searches, I would be much appreciative. I look forward to any and all future correspondence with you.

In History of Washington Co. Tennessee the follow appears on page 504.

During William Stone's residence in Washington Co., he was one of its most prominent citizens and took an active part in church and community affairs. Stone was a Baptist and he and his family are belived to have attended the early Watauga River Church, which is said to have later become Sinking Creek Baptist Church. His civic record was impressive. Besides appearing regularly on the tax lists and in court records as a juror, he was appointed Tax Assessor in 1780 and Captain of the militia in 1790. Moreover, records show that he was a good businessman who bought and sold large tracts of land. Finally after 18 years in Washington Co. in 1796, he and his son Robert removed to newly formed Grainger Co., where they boughtland and William erected a grist mill on Richland Creek near the present-day town of Blain. Both participated actively in local affairs, and made valuable contributions to the organization and developemnt of the new county. Some believe William died in Grainger Co. around 1803 and others that in 1811 he removed to Missouri. William married in Virgina before moving to Tennessee, but his wife's identity has never been determined.

The Book "Leaves From the Family Tree" by Penelope Johnson Allen in talking about the William Bean family from Pittsylvania Co. Va and settled early in 1769 on Boone's creek, a tributary of Watauga said he was joined by his kindred and friends from the same section of Virginia where he had formely lived, and such worthy pioneers as his son, William Bean, Jr., William Stone, Thomas Hardiman and Capt. George Russell. ( Buy Leaves From the Family Tree at Amazon.com )

Hi Joe. I'm the guy who sent you those copies of papers Susannah Stone filed a few years after her husband's death in 1815. I have found a record of John Stone in the County Court minutes in 1807, proving he was in Claiborne County by the time his daughter, Elizabeth [later Mrs. John Breeding] was born in 1808. The elder Reuben Stone [not John and Susannah's son but the older one] served in the same company in the War of 1812 with John Stone. Older Reuben survived and returned to Claiborne County. Both this Reuben and the older Thomas [not your Thomas Henderson Stone] appear in the records of the County Court as late as 1816. The older Reuben also transferred some land to Susannah in before 1820, and I'm in the process of getting a copy of the deed to see what it says...hopefully it will give some clue as to where the older Reuben and Thomas went after they left Claiborne County.

My cousin and I and both our spouses placed a memorial stone for John Stone at Ft. Claiborne, Alabama yesterday morning, then drove straight home. It was a drive of about twelve hours for us.

I am very much interested in the Benjamine and the Elijah Stone which you just sent as an e-mail. What really caught my eye was the fact of the Benjamine Stone dying in Cadiz, Ohio which is in either Harrison or Carroll County Ohio. I am looking for a Sarah Stone who gave her place of birth as being in Maryland. She was born in 1806 but I do not know her parents but I have done some census work in Harrison and Carroll County Ohio and I found the following Stones in Harrison County Ohio:Elijah Stone-Arc Township, in 1820and 1830 showing that he married a May (could be Mary) Suddeth on Dec. 12, 1822 (can't read my writing so I think that it reads 1822.) Also, Jeremiah Stone, Green Township in 1820 and 1830; Jesse Stone in Frederick Township; Solomon Stone in North Township in 1820 and married Catherine Albaugh on August 10, 1819(P. S. the Morris Albaugh family just lived in the same area as my gggrandfather Joseph Gough who married this Sarah Stone.) Benjamin Stone in Green Township in 1830; James Stone in Washington Township in 1830; John Stone in Green Township in 1830; and John Stone in Rumley Township in 1830. Were the Benjamin Stone, Jeremiah Stone, John Stone and the Elijah Stone I just posted for you all related?

I also have this information from the 1790 Census in Maryland: John Stone in Charles County; John Stone in Frederick County; John Stone in Prince George County; John Stone in Washington County; John H. Esq. in Charles County; Nehemiah Stone in Charles County; and Thomas , William, Hanson, David, and Mary Stone all in Charles County.

Using the time frame which I have to work with and using the 1820 and 1830 Harrison County Ohio census, I was able to show that Elijah Stone perhaps could have been my gggrandmother's father but of course there is nothing firm on this.

How extensive has your research been on the Stones in Harrison County Ohio? If you have, would you please share your information with me? Hoping to hear from you very soon. Thank you, Janet Goff Jenkins

(85) John4 Stone, (Joshua3, Joshua2, William1) was born in 1802 at Ga, and married (135) Orra Janet Orr who was born in 1815 at Ga. John died in 1854 at Rusk Co., Texas and was buried at Ross Cem. Orra Janet died in 1858 at Panola Co., Texas and was buried at Ross Cem, Rusk Co., Texas.

John and wife, Orra, married in Alabama where their first four children were born: (the twins, Edna and James were by former wife who had died in Alabama), then John moved his family to Tennessee where the next three children were born: (Frankie Melinda, 1835; Sylvanus, 1837; and jo Anna, 1840). They must have left Tennessee early in the year, 1840, for John's family is not on the U.S. Census for any Tennessee County near other Stones. Since no birth records were kept, on must place them by others in the family who continued to live in Tennessee and were on census lists. This method of reasoining would place them in Warren County for about six years, near John's widowed sister, Dolly Coleman Stone Harrison. Leaving Tennessee for Texas during the "Great Migration" to Texas, john's family spent some months in Mississippi where Peter Wynn Stovall Stone was born, 1841. The journey to Texas was completed a few months later, probably in 1842 or certainly not later than 1843. The other children were born in Panola County where they made their permanent home. Land was bought on Irons Bayou and the family settled at last in their chosen location.

Hi Mr. Payne:
Today I received from the GSA in Washington a packet of material on John Stone, the War of 1812 soldier who died in 1815 and left a widow in Claiborne County named Susannah Stone. In with the papers is an affidavit she made in Tazewell on January 12, 1819, in which she names all her children and their dates of birth: 1. Thomas Stone, b. Aug 13 1802 2. Reuben Stone, b. Sept. 18, 1804 3. Mary Stone, b. Sept. 5, 1806 4. Elizabeth Stone, b. Apr 22, 1808 5. Lucinda Stone, b. Sept. 18, 1809 6. John Stone, b. July 5, 1812 7. Susannah Stone, b. Dec. 23, 1814 - That Scanned Packet of Material

That's the complete list. She says Susannah was about two months old at the time of John's death. Thought you might be interested. Mike Patterson, Colleyville, TX

Evening, Joe -

Thank's very much for your message, and the URL to your "Stone" web site. I admire all the hard work that obviously has gone into the latter; and wish I could identify with the William Stone of Washington and Grainger County. However, I'm afraid the temptation to link a forebear with an illustrious early family may have gotten ahead of the need for sourcing of information.

I may be very wrong, but I do not believe John Stone, husband of Susannah Henderson, and father of Thomas, Reuben, Mary, Betsy, John and Susan was the child of William Stone (of Washington and Grainger Counties). As we know, Susannah filed an application for a widow's pension following John's 1815 death, in which she stated she and John had been married in February 1802 in Union Co. S. C.. We also, know that the couple's first two children, Thomas H. and Reuben F. were born respectively in 1802 and 1804 in South Carolina.

One further comment, John and Susannah named a child John, but Thomas Stone also named a child John. The latter was younger by about five years; and it was he who married Phoebe, ca 1837 (last name unknown to me)

The following information sets forth my understanding of John Thomas Stone's siblings and antecedents. If I'm wrong I'd be delighted to see sources which would more securely link the family to their earlier forebears.

With appreciation for your message.

Tom

===================

John, Reuben and Thomas Stone, Claiborne County, Early 19th Century

John and Susannah Stone arrived in Claiborne County ca 1807, traveling from South Carolina by way of Virginia with their children: Thomas, b. 1802 in S. C. , Reuben, b. 1804 in S. C., and Polly, b. 1806 (assertedly in Virginia). John and Susannah had been married in Union County, South Carolina in February 1802.

In the meantime, a Reuben and Thomas Stone were identified in the area as well. Reubin for example signed a Grainger County petition in 1806, and Reubin and Thomas Stone were each directed by the Claiborne County court in 1808 to assist with road maintenance.

Other official sightings occurred in 1809, when Reuben Stone witnessed a deed on behalf of Abraham Hurst; in 1811, when the Claiborne County land conveyance records show the purchased of property by Thomas Stone; and the 1814 militia service of John and Reuben Stone. They served in Captain John Brock's Company, Col. Samuel Bayless' Regiment of East Tennessee Militia (Claiborne County) . John died in January of 1815, while on militia duty. As noted above, Susannah then filed for a widow's pension, witnessed by Reuben Stone.

As John¹s widow, Susannah was authorized by the Claiborne County Court in August of 1815 to serve as administratrix of John's estate.8 However, there is no record the estate included land; and Claiborne County grantor/grantee land records do not indicate purchase or sale by John and Susannah. However, they may have been sharing property with Reuben; as in 1816 the latter transferred real estate to Susannah. The deed index book does not indicate when or how Reuben came into ownership of the land. There is no further known reference to Reuben, indicating he may have died, or moved from the area.

9 Considering that John and Susannah had been married in Union County, South Carolina in 1802, I examined the 1800 S. C. census and found that two Henderson and three Stone families had been enumerated in Union County in that year: They were:

John Henderson, page 242, with a family composition of 00101 00001. As there was no daughter in the family, it was not likely to have been Susannah's.

Mary Henderson, page 230, family composition of 11000 - 12001 (although there was no male head of family, there were two small boys, a girl under ten, and a girl ten to sixteen). Based on age the latter could have been Susannah.

Caleb Stone, page 237, family composition of 23001 - 11100 (as there was one boy under ten, and three boys ages 10 to 16 it is not likely to have been John's family)
Nancey Stone, page 230 family composition of 01100 - 01001 (with one boy age 10 to 16, and one male 16 to 25, John could well have been within this family
Christopher Stone, page 195 family composition of 10010 - 00000 (as the only child was under ten; thus would not have been John's family).

Given the above, Susannah Henderson may have been the child of Mary Hendeson, and John Stone could have been the child of Nancey Stone. The two families were listed on page 230 of the census; and in each case the families were without male heads of family, indicating the women were either widows, or heading up their respective families while husbands were away seeking land or on other business.

Separate from the above analysis, my conjecture is that John, Reuben and Thomas were closely related either as brothers or perhaps two brothers and their father for the following reasons: a) John and Susannah named their first two children Thomas and Reuben respectively; b) Reuben and John served together in the militia; c) Reuben served as witness for Susannah when she prepared a widow¹s application for a pension; d) the following year Reuben conveyed his Claiborne County land to Susannah; e) an 1839 Claiborne Co. deed refers to Thomas Stone as Thomas M. Stone10; and John¹s son Reuben named a son, born in 1838, Thomas M. Stone. In turn, Thomas M. Stone, Sr. named his first son John, and another son, Reuben.

Concerning the Stone antecedents, although my Union County, S. C. analysis may be faulty, I¹ve seen nothing to suggest a relationship with William and Robert Stone of Grainger County, other than they were in Grainger County during the period of time Thomas, Reuben and John Stone were in Claiborne County. To the contrary, Thomas and Catherine¹s grandson, Abraham Grubb maintained that Thomas¹ forebears were one William Stone, born June 1765, died June 1835; John Stone, born 1740, died 1820; and Thomas Stone, born 1715, died 1780. Unfortunately the grandson did not provide additional information.

This is from another Bible Record of Thomas Wesley Stone that I got from Milly Baumgardner, my first cousin , who is directly kin to the Stone's through her grandmother Amanda Stone.

This family had eleven children, who I will take from the family bible record.

Thomas Wesley was the ninth, I believe that the following included in the Family Record records Manervey Stone, who married Drewrey Laffoon, December 9, 1850, as another of the family. This bible record says that it was bought on July 1, ????, from C. Powella Monday and E. A. Hurst, Paid him the money. T. W. Stone was still alive when he bought it so I wonder if it wasn't stolen.

The man who wrote the note did not give his name.

I'm not sure where the Watkins name came in but I'm positive this is the Fetney Hurst that married Ruben F. Stone.

Mary Hansard tells the following story in Old Time Tazewell.

My mind runs back to the time when I attended school on Ball Creek, near where Mr. W. H. Farmer now lives ( . WILLIAM HENDERSON FARMER ). The school was taught by Rev. Nathan S. McDowell I still remember many of my old schoolmates that I became attached to in the neighborhood of Lone Mountain. They were: the Days, the Breedings, the Johnstons, the Hursts, the Jennings, the Shumates, the Hodges, the Leabows, the Cardwells, the Herrells, the Bowls, the Ragens, and many other too tedious to mention. I love to think of those good old citizens that used to live around in that neighborhood in 1837 when I was young; but they have all passed away long since, and most of thos old schoolmates also, and those of us that are still living have changed so much in our appearance from young to old that when we meet we don not recognize each other.

Mr. Payne,

I have enjoyed your web site. It appears we have some relatives in
common. I am Ann Edmondson Doege of Hinsdale, IL. My father, David
Oscar Edmondson, (1891-1985) was the son of Jefferson Davis Edmondson
(son of James Edmondson and Rachel Widener) and Charlotte Jane 'Charity'
Goin (daughter of Sterling Goin and Mary Jane Keck). My mother, Ethel
Blanche Farmer (1900-1999) was the daughter of Daniel Farmer (son of
Hugh Farmer, Sr. and Rose Ann Arnwine) and Mary Elizabeth Baumgardner
(daughter of James A. Baumgardner and Emily Jane Russell).

William Baumgardner, husband of Amanda Stone, was the oldest brother of
my Grandmother, Mary Baumgardner Farmer. The first two years my mother
attended Claiborne County High School she lived with Uncle Will and Aunt
Amanda during the week as she lived in near Lone Mountain - too far to
travel every day. Mother never ceased to be thankful to them for their
kindness in enabling her to attend high school and she spoke of them as
late as 1998. About 1946 Mother and I traveled from our home in
Bakersfield, CA to Claiborne County. One of the visits we made was to
Aunt Amanda.

I met Clyde, the son of Will and Amanda, once at Grandmother Farmer's
funeral. If you have an e-mail or snail mail address for his daughter I
would like to have it.

I have a picture of a Baumgardner family reunion attended by Will and
Amanda and I think all the then living children and grandchildren. It
was held at the James A. Baumgardner farm. I also have a photo of
Claiborne County High School as it looked when my parents attended and a
photo of Mother's graduating class - 7 May, 1919. I think Mother told
me that was the first graduating class but I'm not sure. I have not
found an announcement or any year book. I would be glad to share copies
of these with you if you are interested. Unfortunately, I do not have
the equipment or skills to scan and send by e-mail.

My father's aunt, Edwina Goin, also married into the Stone family. The
Edmondson family has many stories to tell of her frugality.

Susan Stone was the first wife of Hugh Farmer, Sr. Their children were
half-siblings to my grandfather, Daniel.

Regarding the first three pictures on your web site - pictures not
identified as to family - I do not think they are Baumgardner pictures
and I have many Baumgardner pictures and do no see any similarities.

Lastly, I ordered a Claiborne County book and have not received it.
Have they been sent?

Sincerely,

Ann E. Doege

Hi Joe,

Would we be cousins? I do have a lot of work i've done on the Stone side of my family.. Probably too much to e-mail, but this weekend I am going to copy what I have. Is there an address I can send it too. I have a packet that was had written several years ago by Imogene Rose who was married to Tom Rose and they lived just outside Tazwell. She was the daughter of Ollie Stone Evans, who was a daughter of Robert and Virginia Susan. I visited there in 1958 when I was 14 and we all stayed with Tom and Imogene. He was very comical. He had a slight speech defect and kept everyone in stiches all the time. My dad, D. B. Nash had a 1957 Ford which had been converted to butane and Tom just could not get over that. Tom and Imogene had a daughter, Rebeccah, who I have lost contact with. Robert Stone and his wives(2) had a total of 23 children, 13 by the first and 10 I believe by the 2nd. He supposedly was an excellent maker of whiskey and sold it to the military during the civil war, which may explain all the children. Joke. My grandfather, Thomas Anderson Stone died in Tahoka Texas in 1939. When I visited Tazwell, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gideon Stone, my uncle, from Knoxville, and his wife Hannah. He was very prominent and had invented some surgical tools still in use today. He was blind when I met him. Anyway, I will send you the stuff I have next week.

Thanks, for the info.

Hello,
I just discovered your page. I really like what you have there. And, we have some people in common and some people I'd like to ask you about. You have a BENTON SCHULTZ married to MARY STONE. He's from my line of Shultses (not my direct ancestor) and I have him as GEORGE BENTON SHULTZ. He's the son of Jacob Shultz and Mary Gross of Claiborne Co. Jacob was born in Tryon Co, NC. Mary was the daughter of Jacob and Sabina Gross (I think - have never confirmed this). Jacob Shultz was the son of Dr. Martin Shultz, born in Penn, lived in Tryon Co, NC, lived & died in Sullivan Co, TN (before statehood). I'm descended from Jacob Shultz's brother, Martin, who came to present Sevier Co ca 1794. When Dr. Martin died in Sullivan Co his widow and children just sorta spread down and across East Tenn. There were five sons and a daughter. My ancestor, Martin, and his sister, Julia Ann (who married a Reagan in Sevier Co) were (to my knowledge) the only ones to remain in East Tenn. If you have descendants for Benton-Mary, or further info, I'd like to discuss them.

Now, I also have PHILLIPS ancestors. My mother was a Phillips from Cocke Co. We've only been able to trace this line of Philllipses back to a Jonas Phillips, born 1824 in Hawkins Co. We (my aunt and I) did a book on his descendants about four years ago. But, because we're hunting for Jonas's ancestors, I've actively been collecting Phillips info from all over. I have found the Phillipses to be extremely DIFFICULT to straighten out. Cocke Co, where I was born and grew up, has our line of Phillipses and another, separate, also untraced line of Phillipses. There were unidentified Phillipses in Cocke Co before our Jonas shows up there and they disappear. I tried looking at the Phillipses of Scott Co for a lady I had sold on of my books to. Couldn't make heads or tails of them. Do you have info on Scott Co Phillipses?

If you'd like to discuss these lines further, or maybe exchange some info, I'd like to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Jim SHults Knoxville, TN

Joe,
Thanks for the info. I just retired on July first and I don't have time to do
anything let alone keep up with family history like I want. My Shultz's are from
Tazwell and I did have a book of poems that Eathan Allen Hurst wrote and signed
for my grandmother. My daughter borrowered it and now it is lost. I will try and
attach my Shultz file and you can look it over. Elizabeth Shultz is on Generation
4 no. 29 page two. I will send a photo of Fannie Stone and Mary Harper Stone
also. I also have a lot on the Cloud family but I don't have it in the computer
yet. Keep in touch and let me know if there is any other info you want. I'm still
new at this and I messed up my family tree file and I may have to type it all in
again. The attachments should work though.

(200) Thomas Wesley7 Stone, (Thomas6, John5, William4, Henry3, William2, William1) was born 21 Jun 1844 at Tazewell, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA, and on 13 Dec 1867 at Grainger Co., Tennessee, USA, married (309) Louvinah Beeler, daughter of Daniel Henry Beeler and Lavannah Wolfenbarger, who was born 24 Apr 1847 at Grainger Co., Tennessee, USA. Thomas Wesley died on 7 Nov 1925 at Tazewell, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA and was buried at Irish Mem Cem, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA. Louvinah died on 15 Apr 1877 at Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA and was buried at Irish Mem Cem, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA.

This was my Greatgrandfather, presumably by adoption. I am taking the following notes from Notable Southern Families, by Zella Armstrong, published 1918 and from Goodspeed's History of East Tennessee.

Hurst & Stone, attorneys at law, Tazewell, Tenn., practice in the courts of Claiborne County, and in the supreme court at Knoxville. The partnership was formed in the fall of 1885. Members of the firm are Thomas W. Stone and E. A. Hurst, both of whom reside at Tazewell. T. W. Stone was born in the Eight Civil District of Claiborne County, three and one-half miles southeast of Tazewell, June 21, 1844. His father Thomas H. Stone, came from North Carolinca to Claiborne County when he was quite a small boy, nearly eighty years ago. He grew up on the farm, and married Mary Harper, who was the daughter of Willis Harper, one of the eldest settlers in the county. Thomas W. Stone was the ninth child of a family of eleven all but one fo whom grew to manhood and womanhood, and all but two of whom still live and have families. He was raised on the farm, and his education was very limited. The war broke out while he was yet young, and before he had gone to school exceeding eighteen months altogether. On September 16, 1862, he was conscripted by the Confederate Army, and remained with Company C, Twelfth Tennessee Cavalry, until the fall of 1863, when he escaped from that army, and in February, 1864, volunteered in the Federal Army, Company H, Twelfth Tennessee Cavalry. He was sergeant and clerk of his company, and remained with it until October, 1865, when he was honorabley discharged. After the war he engaged in farming, married Louvina Beeler, a daughter of Daniel and Louvina Beeler, members of the oldest families of Graninger County, December, 1867. He lived in Grainger County two years, then came to Claiborne, where he farmed and sold goods until he was elected clerk of the circuit court of said county in 1874. He served in this capacity one term, during which time he studied law. He obtained a license in 1878, and has, since that time, been engaged in the practice of that profession, together with mercantile and other business. He was a memeber of the firm of T. W. Stone & Co., saddlers and harness makers, of Stone & Wall, and of White & Stone, merchants, of Carr & Stone and of Rogers & Stone, attorneys. He was elected justice of the peace in August, 1882, and still holds that position: served as chairman of county court for the year 1885. He has acquired some property, and has real estate in and near Tazewell worth some $3500. He has one child, a son, by his first marriage, whom he has given a very fair education. His wife, Louvina, died in April, 1877, and he married Harriet Hurt the following August with whom he is now living. He was chairman of the Democratic executive committee of his county from 1876 to 1884, and has been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church since 1872. He was made a Mason in 1874, and has been an officer in Evening Star Lodge, ever since: was Master of the lodge during the year 1883. His first wife was a member of the Methodist Church, his last is a member of the Missionary Baptist.( This was written in 1887 p. 1111 of the Claiborne County Pension Book).

From Family Bible of T. W. Stone, in my possession.

Children:
310 + Leander Daniel8 Stone b. 5 Dec 1868

He also married on 4 Aug 1877 at Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA, (311) Harriet Lenora Hurt, daughter of Meridith Hurt and Lucinda Cowen, who was born 27 Nov 1851 at Jonesville, Lee Co., Virginia, USA. Harriet Lenora died on 12 Jan 1929.

This was T. W. Stone's second wife, and was who my mother considered her Grandmother.

Her date of death was recorded in the Family Bible Record.

Hi Joe: Thanks for your post. The Wesley Simmons who married Nancy Owens was a different man than my Wesley, who was born about 1804. The
1850 census has the other Wesley with his new wife, Nancy, living with an Owens family. I don't know who this other man was, but he wasn't the
father of my John Wesley Simmons (1826-1895). Both Wesleys are in the 1850 Claiborne County census.

I'm not convinced that the Grainger County Revolutionary soldier John Simmons was the father of John who married Phoebe Clark. In 1830 there
was a John Simmons in Grainger County who was about the same age as my John in Claiborne...both of the men were 50-60 years old....and I
haven't been able to rule out the younger Grainger County man being the son of the Revolutionary soldier.

I have examined the personal papers of the lady who wrote the Chatata Valley book (which she left to the library in Cleveland, Tennessee), and
they don't contain any documents to support the idea of the Revolutionary soldier being the ancestor. I also went to Bradley County
(where Chatata Creek is located) last year and talked to the Simmons genealogists there, and they don't know the origin of the material
either. The Grainger County probate records and deed records don't contain anything to tie the Claiborne County man to the Grainger County
man; neither do the Claiborne County records.

I was back in Claiborne in May, and we put up a gravestone at the grave of my gg gm, Emily (Stone) Simmons in the Reuben F. Stone family
cemetery.

Thanks again. Mike Patterson

Hi Joe - Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I have finally entered all my information on Amanda Stone's family. I am going to attempt to send it as an attachment to this message. I did not send it as a Gedcom, because the way I set my project up, a Gedcom would also give you all of MY family, which is not related to Amanda Stone (except me and my kids of course). I may have to go back and start all over, entering families as separate projects, but since I intended it to be my children's family tree, I entered it all as one. Anyway, what you are getting is a family journal. 98% of this information came from two of Amanda's great-grandaughters, Helen Kirkland and Billie Blankenship. They got much of their information from a family Bible in Helen's possession. If you are not able to use this information the way it is, let me know, and we'll see what we can do. Or if I do the "attachment thing" wrong. I would really appreciate any information you can send me that you have. If possible, I would prefer that you send it in a text file, so I can enter it myself. This seems to help me remember what information I've seen. Thanks in advance, Karen Pritchett

Job and Amanda moved at least four times between Grapevine, Texas and Claiborne County. The first appears to have been made about 1870. Amanda when planning a trip would begin making extra quilts. As the family traveled she would sell a quilt for supplies. As the supplies ran out she would simply sell another quilt. Job was a private in Company B 1st Battalion, Tennessee Light Artillery. His Military headstone is Amanda's headstone. He is buried in Arkansas. .

Joe, I was reading some of the info I am sending you and wanted to tell you something funny that happened when I wnet to Tennessee in 1958. Tom and Imogene took us to see Uncle Fred O. Stone and his wife(?) in some town west of Tazwell. He had an old hospital there. Any way, they took a liking to me and wanted me to stay all night with them while I was there and told me I could stay in their son's room. Remember, I was only 14 at the time. His room was on a top floor of the hospital in one corner and nothing else was on the floor. His son, had studied to be a dentist and the room was filled with sets of teeth. It was in the summer and there was no air conditioning. That night, I sweated, fought mosquitoes and lay in horror of all those teeth. I remember Uncle Fred was sort of grouchy and his wife was very jolly and liked to drink quite a bit. I wish I could remember her name. He had a terrible case of skin exema all over his arms. I remember one of his patients I guess had come from the coal country. She was big and pregnant and her feet were sticking out the end of the bed and they were dirty and black. I heard stories that he was one of the last doctors that still accepted material things instead of money from his patients because most of them were poor miners or such. I liked Uncle Fred even thought he was grouchy, but you could tell he had a kind heart.

All of Thomas Anderson Stone and Mary Alice Gray Stone's children escept my mother have passed away now.

They were: Raymond, Fred, Carl, Ed, & T.A.My mother is Elva Christine Stone Nash.

Joseph (Joe Tucker) died in 1959 at Oneida, Scott Co., Tennessee and was buried in 1959 at Tazewell, Claiborne Co., Tennessee.

!This is the Authors Grandfather, who he knew well, as he didn't die until 1959. Several things I remember about my Granddad Phillips were his visits to my parents house in Tazewell, where he slept in the guest bedroom in the four poster handmade cherry bed, made by my Uncle Doug Wilson. Granddad was a very loving person and usually enjoyed a good joke. He was a fisherman in his earilier years and liked going with my father and uncle. He chewed tobacco and would keep a spit cup by the bed. He enjoyed a good cigar on occasion and glad that my brother George remembered to send him some, Havana, if I remember correctly. I remember an accident he had once while staying with us and attempting to return to Scott County on a bad winter day. He came back to the house with a cut on his head. I remember his trips to Texas with my father, where he owned a farm, 360 acres. He had bought the farm along with Roberta Carr, Park A. Carr's wife sometime maybe in the early 1900's. Mrs. Carr and her husband had owned the farm since the late 1800's. It was located near Plainview, Texas. Just before selling the farm, that my Granddad had bought along with my father from Mrs. Carr, they had drilled for and struck a water well and had two crops of cotton. They had drilled two wells, the first hit a pocket of natural gas, which they capped and moved on to another section where the water was struck. They got in the neighborhood of $80,000.00 for the farm and retained about 1/8th the minieral rights. I have done extensive research on the ownership of these rights and whether any drillings have been done. There are two articles I wrote for the Claiborne County Historical Society regarding my Granddad's exploits while an Agent with the ATF, Prohibition Division of the Treasury Department. I believe the Winter 1992 Edition and the Spring 1993. Many articles from the Lousville Courier and papers in Memphis and Chicago are among the items in my possession. Among his other accomplishments were his first job with the Cumberland Chronical, 1890's, his his serving in the Spanish American War, the Phillipians and in China during the Boxer Rebellion. He returned and married my Grandmother, had the first power and light company in Claiborne Co., the first motion picture theater, was County Road Commissioner was Captain of the local Volunteer malitia, was a U.S. Marshall, Pinkerton Agent and lastly Deputy Chief Adminstrator over Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee for the U. S. Treasury Department's Prohibition Service.

The Commercial Hotel that was owned and operated by Abner Hansard a cabinet maker, the fifth house was the only building facing Main Street on the next block. It was Graham's lumber house. Since that time it has been turned around and is now used as a store house by Joe Phillips. The sixth house, Buchanan Brothers large store building occupied the southwest corner of the third block. The tenth house stood on the site of the Shell Hotel and was a large brick store owned by J. L. Evans and Brother.

In reading some Stone family information I printed off, I have a couple minor corrections on Elmer Flint Stone (alias Clyde Elva Stone)----son of Samuel W. Stone. Elmer Flint changed his name when he deserted the Navy. Elmer married Ada Evans. They had 3 children Elmer, Orville, and Elva (married Dan Bayles) from this marriage. His second marriage was to Mrytle Dale. They had two daughters Sammy and Clydene. Elmer Flint was my husbands grandfather. His father was Elmer Stone and mother Anna Marguerite Koroush.

Farris (alias Charlie) Stone -----sone of Augustine Stone and Sallie Lovelace was cousin who joined Navy with Elmer Flint and both jumped ship. Farris died in Oregon City, Oregon. His wife was Dora.

Thought you might enjoy reading this. I cut the repeats out of the interview. My father in law had a way of rambling when telling family stories. This was recorded and typed up by another family member. Some things I know aren't correct, such as Samuel being Scottish. Know Elmer Flints death certicate also said his dad was born in Scotland, but we know different. Once I found that this one lineage I had put the family back in Twiston, Lancashire, England, made me wonder if way back they did come from Scotland or were Scottish, as Lancashire is pretty close to Scotland. But since no actual proof of that being this family, I will ignore that place for now. So some of is probably true and how much more is family story I don't know. It is just kind of interesting and I had forgot it told why Elmer Flint deserted the Navy. Hadn't looked at it in several years. Some parts are a little disjointed I think, but hopefully you get the drift. If you want to use some of it, okay. If not, just enjoy reading. I need to dig out some more files for the other information on his children, grandchildren and gr. grandchildren (that I have). Margie Stone

INTERVIEW WITH ELMER STONE (SON OF ELMER FLINT ALIAS CLYDE ELVA STONE)told on AUG. 27, 1975 about his father. Monroe, Oregon

I came home from school when a freshman in high school and found a man there who was an officer in the navy and had my dad's registration card from World War I.
He told me who he was and explained to me what he was doing there: He said "from the day your dad signed this card, he was a free man." Because he jumped the navy in time of peace and when world war I came on dad signed up at his regular rate. But dad was a freight clerk down here in the depot. He signed up in a regular navy at his regular job. Southern Pacific Company had him for a freight clerk so they got him deferred because they had to have men to move freight. Dad was a freight clerk in Monroe during the war, up to 1920. Then he went out and worked as a track walker for awhile, finally going to work in the bridge gang.
While in the Navy he had been a supply clerk. The guy with all the keys to open the lockers to the grocery supplies and commissary.
He was in the Navy because he belonged to the pistol team. He made goodwill cruises around the world with U.S.S. Pensacola and U.S.S. Maryland as part of the pistol team. He became an officer because he got on the pistol shooting program they carried. He jumped ship because they would not let him go ashore in Europe. So when they pulled into the Philippines and he was able to go ashore, he kept going once his feet touch ground.
Don't know how he got to San Franciso, but when he got there he headed to Portland, Oregon. Once there looked for a job and saw an ad for survey crew. Since he had worked for survey crew in the railroad company in Tennessee, and knew how to read a transit, he answered the ad for a setting up an orchard near Monroe, OR. He was paid every night and saved enough money that along with another fellow they invested in a pool hall. The pool hall burned when the town of Alpine, Oregon burnt (about 1920).
He continued working in the orchards and then the railroad. A timber slipped out of the tongs on a bridge. He had set the timber in the tongs, and they wheeled it up from down below and when it got near the top, the timber hit something on the bridge and dislodged it from the tongs. It broke loose and slid down and hit dad. Splintered his pelvis, broke his legs. He was sent to the hospital in Frisco (San Fancisco). (was retired from this and developed heart disease from it, and died of a heart attack at age 49. He went to Texas when his brother got killed by a Mexican doctor. His Brother was a doctor (James T. Stone). This Mexican doctor had a patient who quit him and went to Jim. This Mexican was mad about that and pulled out a pistol and shot him. They were in the meat market in Corona, New Mexico. (Nov. 18, 1921) Charlie used to stop by and see us once in awhile. His mother was a Lovelace. I think he was a lawyer. Uncle Bose said "now I ain't said Charley stole that horse; the horse just left when Charlie did". Bose never accused Charlie of stealing that horse, but when he left to go with dad, Charlie took a horse that belonged to his brother in law. He'd been working and helping his brother in law farm, so he just saddled up the horse and rode off to Mexico. They rode horseback thru Texas and Old Mexico and New Mexico. They were still just a kids. Elmer Flint was going to Lincoln Memorial University when Whit or one of Stone boys went down to visit. The visitor was shown a good time and Elmer had a team of horses down there and showed his brother a good time. All the girls and fun he was having. Of course this brother goes home and tells his dad (Samuel Stone). So you know how the old man was, he was a Scotsman, he wrote a letter to Elmer Flint telling him "I sent you down there to study, not horse around. You send that team back home". Dad took the team home himself. He and Charlie up and decided they'd go see the world and so they went down there and was lookin' for gold and the Mexicans run them out. Then the got into real estate venture in Texas and found out that they was goin' out and showin' these people this way out in the wilderness nice piece of ground The were showing this piece of ground to different people, and the deeds to the property were made out to ground that was miles away. While selling this ground they were living way out in a cabin. A sandstorm hit and got into everything in the cabin and they ended up sleeping with the horses. After that they left Texas for California were they saw advertisements for the Navy. So they joined.
End of interview.

I would love to have my name added. As a background, I was born March 15,
1974, to Leander Daniel Stone, III (attorney) and Betty Lou Manning Stone
(retired register nurse[RN] and practicing physician assistant [PA]). My
sister, Leigh Anne Stone McAfee (elementary school teacher at Soldiers
Memorial Middle School) was born September 17, 1971. She married John
DeLane McAfee (attorney and Judge) and they have a son, Thomas DeLane McAfee
who turns four years old in October 2001. I married Suzanne Michelle Daniel
Stone (speech language pathologist) who was born 11/5/71 in Lawrenceburg
(Lawrence County) Tennessee to Larry Daniel and Linda Jones Daniel. The
marriage between Suzanne and I occurred on July 19, 1997.

Thanks for what appears to be very intensive and extensive work.

Sincerely,

Wesley D. Stone
