Hi Ron,
Another piece of the puzzle. Someday we may find enough pieces to start
to make a picture.
I actually know of three Bozeman Captains who were around at the time of
the American Revolution although none of them are known to have been
from Surry County, VA.
The first was Captain Edward Bozeman who was, on August 12, 1777, the
master of the Rochester, a vessel of 100 tons. The ship was cleared from
Hampton on that date and was captured near Cape Charles by the HMS
Sphinx on Aug. 15. Records indicate that Capt. Bozeman was from
Broadway, VA which is nowhere near Surry County. However, the owner of
the ship was Col. Elliot who was from Williamsburg. The six crew
members shipped from James River. The ship carried tobacco and staves
from various warehouses on the Appotomax River. So, I suppose it is
possible that Capt. Edward Bozeman is the Captain that you found a
reference to.
The second is Captain Joseph Bozman of Edenton on Albemarle Sound,
Chowan County, North Carolina. He was a merchant and owned several
ships. He was wounded on shipboard while fighting the British during
the American Revolution. He is referred to as Capt. Bozman in the
family Bible.
The third is Captain Levin Bozman of Plymouth, NC. He was a brother of
Capt. Joseph Bozman. Levin Bozman was engaged in mercantile and
shipping.
Joseph Bozman and Levin Bozman were in the Bertie County, NC area by
1781. I don't know where they were before that time. So, I suppose
they could have been from the Surry County, VA area.
Sorry I can't offer anything conclusive.
Steve

Subject: [BOZEMAN] Captain Bozeman
There was a mention in the latest Magazine of Virginia Genealogy
( Vol. 41, No. 4) about an account ledger of Faulcon & Company
listing goods shipped through the town of Mount Airy in Surry Co,
Virginia, between 15 December 1776 and November 1779. One
of the names listed as receiving goods in March of 1777 was a
Captain Bozeman.
I suppose that he might have been a Captain in the Revolutionary
War, but that is just a guess. I am not aware of a Bozeman who
was found in Surry County at that time, although there were
several in nearby Southampton Co, as listed on the 1770 tax rolls
were Benjamin Bozeman and his son Howell and William Bozeman
and his son Jordan. One of these men (perhaps William) might have
been the Captain Bozeman who received goods that passed through
Surry County. There was also a mention in these records of barrels
of pork shipped from Smithfield in Isle of Wight Co, so that the origins
of the well-known Smithfield hams must go back to Revolutionary War
times.
This Captain Bozeman is apparently just another one of the several
loose ends that we have found from time to time, but he could be an
important loose end. I do find that there was testimony by William G.
Bozeman in 1823 who said that his grandfather was a Nottaway
Indian Chief who had died in defense of his country during the
Revolutionary War, but not having a Bozeman war record from that
date I have assumed that this might have been a maternal
grandfather, but perhaps not. If this was a Bozeman grandfather,
(maybe William) then perhaps it was William G. Bozeman's
great-grandmother who had belonged to the Nottaway tribe.
If so, this would have placed the birth of his great-grandfather
back to about 1725 or before. We have records showing that
Henry Bozeman bought land adjacent to Nottaway Indian lands in
1716 and that he lived there until at least 1725 in what was then
Isle of Wight, but later became Southampton.
Then in 1733/4, a Samuel Bozeman bought land nearby to where
Henry Bozeman had lived between 1717 and 1730. This land was sold
in 1735 by Samuel Bozeman and wife Mary and a witness to the deed
was Samuel Bozeman, Jr. I am wondering if it might have been Samuel
Bozeman, Jr, who was the great-grandfather of William G. Bozeman and
the father of William Bozeman and Benjamin Bozeman and if it might have
been the wife of Samuel, Jr, who came from the Nottaway Indian tribe. If
so, then the family line of William G. Bozeman of 1823 might have
gone as follows:
Samuel Bozeman, Jr (born by 1714)/Nottaway Indian wife
William Bozeman (born before 1734)
Jordan Bozeman (born before 1754)
William G. Bozeman (born ca. 1800)
If Samuel, Jr, of 1735 was the son of Samuel, Sr, and wife Mary,
then this would place the birth of Samuel, Sr, back before 1700 and
would appear to make him the son Samuel of Ralph Bozeman, Sr, of
Isle of Wight. However, I am now considering the possibility that this
Samuel, Sr, might have been the son of Henry Bozeman, as we do
know that Henry was mentioned in land records as early as 1685
and could have had a son born at that early date. At any rate,
it seems very likely that at least some of the Bozeman men found
in early Southampton Co. were descendants of Henry Bozeman and
wife Mary. It does seem that we should be able to learn the name of
the Nottaway Indian Chief who died in the Revolutionary War, but I
have never found any record of that. Another mystery is: which of the
Bozeman men in early Southampton Co. was it that was married to
the daughter Mary Bozeman named by John Williford in his 1760 will?
John Williford had a grandson named Benjamin Williford and if it
turned out to be a case of a Bozeman sister and brother
both marrying into the Williford family then perhaps a daughter
of Benjamin Bozeman had married a son of John Williford and a
son of Benjamin (Howell ?) had married the daughter Mary of
John Williford, with both Benjamin and William Bozeman being
sons of Samuel Bozeman, Jr. My best to all, Ron Bullock
